DEEP COLLABORATION THROUGH LANGUAGE IMMERSION

Collaboration here isn't a buzzword: it's woven into everything we do given that our students in grades N-5 alternate their days between their English and Target Language classrooms.

  • Teacher teams composed of English and Spanish teachers or English and Chinese teachers share two classes of students
  • Teacher teams share responsibility for teaching curriculum that promotes their students’ social, emotional and academic growth in both languages.
  • Given this structure teacher teams communicate daily to plan lessons and discuss student progress
  • Additionally teachers collaborate with fellow grade-level and language colleagues during weekly meetings.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Avenues is seeking a Literacy Specialist to join the team of inspiring educators in the Lower Division, grades 1-5. This Literacy Specialist will work primarily in either grades 1-3 or 3-5 to ensure that students have the skills and support they need to be successful in the immersion program. 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Literacy Specialist’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Student Support
    • Support, supplement and extend classroom literacy instruction to small groups of students 
    • Push in facilitation as needed for reading, writing and word study
  • Collaboration
    • Work in partnership with other Literacy Specialists, members of Student Success Team, classroom teachers and Associate Division Heads to ensure that each student is progressing in his/her literacy skills
  • Reading and Writing Specialist
    • Administer, score and analyze running records
    • Support students’ writing development using a workshop model
    • Support teachers in planning and implementation of English literacy curriculum
    • Provide input on reading and writing curriculum
    • Support professional development and provide literacy coaching for teachers in grades 3-5
    • Use Orton Gillingham, TC and Fountas and Pinnell curriculum and resources as needed
    • Work with the Associate Division Head to plan and lead English literacy meetings for teaching teams in the grades assigned

WHAT YOU BRING

  • At least 5 years of teaching experience in grades 1-5, with a proven track record of student learning
  • Strong understanding of, and instructional skills teaching through a balanced literacy approach in the reading and writing workshop model
  • The ability to uncover phonemic processing issues and provide supplemental instruction as needed. 
  • Highly effective collaborator, eager to listen deeply, contribute to a team and achieve goals together
  • Ability to problem-solve and self-initiate projects as needed 
  • Deep dedication to learning and growing as an educator
  • Eager to embrace change and consider new perspectives
  • Graduate degree in education, teaching, or a related field 
  • Literacy or special education degree or relevant training and experience working with children that have language based learning challenges preferred
  • Strong desire to problem-solve
  • A sense of humor is always a plus!
